Special Olympics Michigan 2013 Night Out with the Whitecaps May 18

 COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.—Special Olympics athletes will take over Fifth Third Ballpark Saturday, May 18 for the “Special Olympics Michigan 2013 Night Out with the Whitecaps.”

The event includes a Special Olympics softball game from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., the Whitecaps- Bowling Green Hot Rods game at 7 p.m. and  post-game fireworks.

Tickets are $10, with $2 from each pass going to Special Olympics Michigan programs in West Michigan.

Powerball jackpot reaches $360 million

ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- $360 million, that's the jackpot in Wednesday night's Powerball lottery drawing. It's the third largest prize in the game's history.

Wednesday evening, people were streaming into Party World on Alpine Avenue to buy their tickets, in hopes of winning big money.

In the last four years, the store has sold at least six winning tickets with major jackpots, a status workers at the Michigan Lottery have confirmed.

If no one wins Wednesday night's jackpot it could go up to $400 million for Saturday's drawing.

School is just starting for local MSP trooper recruits

The school year is wrapping up for many people, but it’s just beginning for dozens prospective Michigan State Police troopers.

Sunday, May 12, 80 men and women from across the state began the 125th Trooper Recruit School.  For the next 21 weeks, MSP members and academy staff will train the recruits in firearms, water safety, defensive tactics, patrol techniques, report writing, ethics, first aid, criminal law, crime scene processing and precision driving.  Recruits who successfully complete the training will graduate October 4.

Michigan State Police selected recruits from more than 3,000 potential candidates.

According to the FBI, 800,000 children in the U.S. go missing every year.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department is teaming up with the FBI to lower that number, by providing at-home child identification kits.

The kits contain an inkless fingerprint kit, DNA collection swab as well as other emergency information. Starting at 11 a.m.

Jeff Ford, Student of the Week at West Catholic

It takes a pretty ambitious student to keep up grades and still have time to complete more than 600 hours of service hours during high school. This is the lifestyle of Jeff Ford, a senior at West Catholic High School, here on Grand Rapids' Westside.

Besides directing a Middle School play at St. Anthony’s School, Jeff sings at St. Anthony’s Church during Mass, is a member of the National Honor Society, Drama Club, a leader of the Life Force team, has been in numerous musicals and was captain of the Soccer team.

Optometry is his field of choice when he attends Ferris State University next fall.

Bluegrass band takes over library

SPRING LAKE, Mich.--Music lovers of all ages are invited to a free performance of bluegrass music at Spring Lake District Library Sunday, May 19.

"Patchwork Band", one of West Michigan’s favorite bluegrass bands, will play traditional and modern bluegrass as well as some original songs during its 3 p.m. performance.

Band members Ruth and John Lakatos of Grand Haven, Bryan Garlotte of Comstock Park, and Mark Walker of Dorr are veterans of the bluegrass music scene. Known for their tight harmonies, they perform throughout Michigan and Indiana. Ruth plays guitar, John plays bass, Bryan plays banjo, and Mark plays mandolin.
