Beer festival sold out

COMSTOCK PARK (WZZM) - For an indicator of the health of Michigan's craft beer industry, come to Fifth Third Ballpark Saturday. If you have a ticket. And, chances are, you can't get one. The sixth annual Michigan Winter Beer Festival sold out three weeks before last year's event, despite offering 25% more tickets.

"We're a poster child for economic growth and success in Michigan" said Scott Graham Friday.

Graham, executive director of the Michigan Brewer's Guild, was sipping a Schmoz beer, brewed in Grand Rapids, as he surveyed the acres of tents and port-a-potties put up to serve the over 5,000 people expected for Saturday's festival.

Founder's Brewing in Grand Rapids is in the midst of a $6.6 million expansion; and Bell's the state's leading craft brewer, will invest $52 million.

"People just love beer" Graham says.

One of 62 breweries represented Saturday will be Brewery Vivant, which opened recently on Cherry Street in Grand Rapids.
