Filling Station Remodel Complete

If you stopped in to refuel with a meal at The Filling Station recently, you may have been greeted by a 'Closed for Remodeling' sign at the front door. The day after Labor Day, the restaurant closed for a nine day remodel that included changes to the dining area including installing new carpet, new ceiling tiles, new booth upholstery, and removing one row of booths and replacing it with tables and chairs.  The kitchen also received some updating including replacing two of the grills and coolers.

The rest of the decor - memorabilia from old gas stations, road signs and license plates - remains the same.

The Christopoulos family purchased The Filling Station back in March of this year.  They also own six Mr.

Boyd School Reunion

Several dozen graduates of Boyds school met today at the Alpine Township Historic Hall and Museum as part of a school reunion sponsored by the Alpine Township Historic Society.  This one room school house housed students for over a hundred years, opening its doors in 1858 and permanently closing in the 1960s.  READ MORE


Grand Rapids Model Railroad Historical Society Hosts Open House

On the outskirts on Alpine Township, next to the fish hatcheries. sits an old red brick building that had been  empty for years, and is currently the home of the Grand Rapids Model Railroad Historical Society.  Over the the past few years, members of the organization have been busy building a scaled replica of the Pere Marquette Railroad as it existed between Plymouth, Michigan and Chicago Illinois circa 1945.  READ MORE 

Comstock Park Rotary Club Honors Martin D. Buth

The Comstock Park Rotary declared Friday Martin Buth Day and honored him and his family at a picnic at Wahlfield Park.  Martin Buth recently celebrated his 93rd birthday.  He is the only surviving charter member of the Comstock Park Rotary Club and a past president of the organization.  Marty has served his community in many capacities, including as a member of the Planning Commission and Board of Trustees of Plainfield Towhship, the Michigan House of Representatives, and the Kent County Board of Commissioners. National POW/MIA Day

Alpine Township was one of many communities in the Greater Grand Rapids area that passed proclamations declaring September 17 2010 as Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Recognition Day.  Leaders from these communities were on hand at a special ceremony conducted at the chapel of the Grand Rapids Veteran's Home in North Park.  There are currently 361 Michigan military men and women still  unaccounted for or missing from the Korea conflict, 53 from the Vietnam conflict, 4 from the cold war, and 1 from Iraq.  READ MORE

West Catholic 24 Comstock Park 12

COMSTOCK PARK (WZZM) -- The West Catholic Falcons looked to continue their dominance in the O-K Blue, as they took on the Comstock Park Panthers Friday.

In the 1st quarter there was a little confusion for the Falcons.  Lance Bewten-Dyke ran into his own man, fumbled the ball.  Comstock Park fell on it for the recovery but the turnover led to nothing.

Points were hard to come by in this game until just before the half.  Lance Bewten-Dyke with the q-b keeper for West Catholic took it right side for the score. 

West Catholic beat Comstock Park 24 - 12.

District Governor Visits Comstock Park Rotary Club

The Comstock Park Rotary Club was honored today with a visit from District Governor Timothy Knaggs.  Tim joined the Rotary Club of Cadillac, Michigan USA in 1990. As Governor, Tim oversees the activities of about sixty Rotary Clubs located in West and Northern Michigan and Canada.

Tim applauded the Comstock Park Rotary Club for their many achievements, including their work at Grotto Park and their role in the installation of playgrounds at Wahlfield Park and York Creek.  Tim also took the opportunity to present the Paul Harris award to Vice President Dick Woodward.  This award can be awarded to anyone deemed worthy of that honor.  Also receiving an award was Treasurer Frank Vietze.  Joining District Governor Knaggs was current Assistant Governor Violet Roher from Sparta.
