13th annual World's Largest Dog Wash at Fifth Third Ballpark


COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. (WZZM) -- Sunday is probably the only day you can get your dog washed while checking out a West Michigan White Caps game.

Gilda's Club Grand Rapids is hosting the 13th annual World's Largest Dog Wash at Fifth Third Ballpark during the Whitecaps "Dog Days" game on July 12.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features dog washes, doggy bag giveaways and a number of pet contests.

The cost is $10 per dog. That money goes to the Children's Cancer and Grief Program.

Admission to the game is not included with the dog wash, but dog wash attendees can park at the ballpark for free during the event.

Dozing Hummer driver strikes Kent Co. deputy's cruiser


ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- No one was seriously hurt was hurt when a Hummer SUV collided with a Kent County Sheriff's deputy cruiser Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. at Lamoreaux Dr. and Stony Creek Ave. NW.

Authorities say the driver of the Hummer fell asleep at the wheel and struck the deputy's vehicle at a stop sign.

The deputy was taken to a hospital for a health evaluation as a precaution.

Meijer State Games officially open


GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- It's a big weekend for sports in West Michigan. The sixth annual Meijer State Games kicked off its second and biggest weekend with an opening ceremony Friday at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The Meijer State Games is a multi-sport, Olympic-style event that welcomes athletes regardless of age or ability. Forty-four different venues are hosting the games and 7,500 athletes will compete more than 40 different sports.

The games are expected to have an estimated $14.3 million economic impact in West Michigan. Hoteliers and restaurants will benefit from the large number of people traveling here from other parts of the state.

Registration is still open and members of the community are encouraged to support the games and athletes by attending the events.

Padres win again in Let's Go to Bat for Kids fundraiser


COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. (WZZM) -- Fifth Third Ballpark held the Let's Go to Bat for Kids fundraiser for Catholic Charities West Michigan tonight, and the Padres extended their decades-long winning streak with a 12-11 victory.

The game pits area priests, playing as the CCWM Padres, against TV, radio, and print personalities, playing as the Media Giants. The Media Giants have never won.

The event has been held for nearly three decades and supports the foster programs of Catholic Charities West Michigan.

Missy and Tom Bozung joined the WZZM 13 News at 5 on Tuesday to talk about their experiences as foster parents. They have fostered about 15 kids in the last 15 years and say the experience has been very rewarding. See more of what they have to say in the video below.

Hundreds lose power in Comstock Park


COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. (WZZM) -- Consumers Energy has restored power to about 500 customers in West Michigan who lost it late Monday afternoon.

The outage was reported around 5 p.m., generally along West River Drive from I-96 up to the ramps for US-131.

2nd Annual Grand Rapids Home for Veterans Benefit Run

On Saturday, July 18, 2015, the VFW Post 4249 of Newaygo will be hosting the Michigan Knights of Columbus 4th Degree District 4, 2nd Annual Grand Rapids Home for Veterans Benefit Run.

Runners are asked to meet at 3000 Monroe Ave NE in Grand Rapids, MI at 9:00am. Ride to the VFW in Newaygo, leaving at 11:30am.

A $25 donation covers food, fun and a raffle ticket. There will also be music, prizes and refreshments.
