WANTED: Local chefs for WZZM 13 News

WZZM 13 News at Noon is looking for local chefs to be involved in cooking segments airing on Fridays and Wednesdays.

Wednesday’s segments will focus on healthy recipes, so please specify if you’re interested in healthy cooking.

For the segments, chefs should arrive at the station (645 3 Mile Road NW) at 11:45 a.m., and stay until the segment airs around 12:20 p.m. WZZM 13 will provide a gas stovetop, but chefs should bring all equipment/ingredients needed to make their dish.

My Town Comstock Park: Whitecaps looking for bands for Social Media Night

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.—The West Michigan Whitecaps are once again turning to Facebook to help piece together  Social Media Night.

The team is looking for a local band to play at the post-game party on the Miller Lite House Deck.  The Whitecaps are asking fans to submit the name of their favorite local band on Facebook by Monday, May 12.  The team will chose the best ones and then put them up for a vote.

Earlier this year, the Whitecaps challenged fans to come up with a custom jersey for the team to wear during Social Media Night.  Submissions were made through Facebook and Twitter.  Social Media Night will take over Fifth Third Ballpark Thursday, May 29.

My Town: Kenowa Hills hosts Homes For A Hero benefit May 2

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.—Community members are invited to show their support for veterans by taking part in Kenowa Hills High School’s Homes For A Hero event thgis Friday, May 2.

Students have spent weeks preparing for the benefit, which will take place at Kenowa Hills High School, from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  The celebration will include a silent auction, cook-out and live entertainment as well as a ceremony recognizing veterans and active military members.

Homes For A Hero will also include a varsity rugby game between Kenowa Hills and Grand Haven, starting at 6 p.m.  Kenowa Hills’ team will be sporting camouflage jerseys  for the game. After the match-up, the Grand Rapids Original Swing Society will hold swing dancing under the stadium lights, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Proceeds from Homes For A Hero will go toward building a home for a veteran.  Students are teaming up with Homes of Hope, a Grand Rapids organization, for the six-day build.

My Town: Kent Career Tech Center names first National Tech Honor Society members

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—A dozen students from Kent Career Tech Center are now members of the National Technical Honor Society.

The students were inducted into the Tech Center’s inaugural NTHS class for demonstrating outstanding skills in their program and overall academic achievement.  The NTHS is similar to the National Honor Society, but with tougher requirements, including involvement in a career or technical education program, a 3.5 or higher GPA and community service hours.

My Town Comstock Park: Book Sale to support library programs this weekend

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.— Support literacy while getting a good deal on gently used books during the Kent District Library’s Book Bash Giant Warehouse Book Sale this weekend.

More than 20,000 books and many other items will be available for $0.50 to $1.00 each.  Shoppers who visit Sunday can get as many items as they can fit into a bag for $5.  All proceeds from the sale will support Summer Reading @ KDL and other branch programs.

The Book Bash Giant Warehouse Book Sale will take place at the KDL Service Center at 814 West River Center Drive NE in Comstock Park.  Sale hours are Friday, April 25 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Sunday, April 27 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

My Town Alpine Township: Master Plan open house April 22

ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (Alpine Charter Township)--Alpine Township needs your help in updating the community’s Master Plan.

The Master Plan lays out the vision for the community’s desired future and outlines the policies and steps to get there. The Township needs to hear your thoughts and ideas about what you would like for your community’s future.

To receive your input, the Alpine Township Planning Commission will host a final open house at the Township Center, 5255 Alpine Avenue, NW, Comstock Park, MI 49321 on April 22, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Planning commissioners and staff will be on hand to answer questions and take comments. Stop by for a bit, let us know what you think and help guide the direction of your community!
