Excel Charter Academy honors Martin Luther King Jr. with day of service

KENTWOOD, Mich.--  Excel Charter Academy students remembered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ahead of the holiday by serving their community.

 On Friday, Jan. 17, seventh and eighth grade students divided up to help community organizations, including the YWCA, Kids Food Basket, Feeding America West Michigan, Habitat for Humanity, Baxter Community Center, Degage, GRASP, Goodwill and In The Image.

As part of Excel’s MLK Service Day, Arbor Circle also visited the school to teach sixth grade students about teenage homelessness and how they can help support teenagers in need.

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.—The Comstock Park Parent-Teacher Organization is inviting families for a night out to help the schools.

The Comstock Park PTO Annual Night Out will take place Saturday, Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. in the Wave Room at Celebration Cinema North.  The event includes dinner catered by Twisted Rooster followed by a private screening of “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit”.  An auction to benefit school programs is also planned.

ChoiceOne Bank is one of the sponsors of the event, contributing $1,500.

 “The Annual Night Out event is focused on the Comstock Park schools and community. We are pleased to be a part of such a generous and exciting event,” said ChoiceOne Bank President and CEO Jim Bosserd.

Design a game time jersey for the West Michigan Whitecaps to wear

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.— The West Michigan Whitecaps could wear a jersey designed by you this summer.

Baseball fans are invited to design a uniform for the team as part of Social Media Night  on May 29.  All entries should be social media themed.  The deadline for submissions is noon on Jan. 15.  The top designs will be voted on by fans early next month.

The winner will get four tickets to the May 29 game, a copy of their jersey and  a chance to throw out the first pitch during the game.   For more information and a jersey submission form, click here.

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—The Kent District Library is putting the “pub” in public library starting next month.

With the growing popularity of the craft beer industry in West Michigan, KDL decided to begin offering free home brewing classes, brewery tours, brewery book discussions and beer tastings in January and February 2014.

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.-- The community can start their own magical family tradition with this light show, which runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Fifth Third Ballpark, now through Jan. 4.

The drive-thru is more than a mile long with millions of lights portraying animated Christmas characters and holiday objects. The cost is $15 per vehicle, $22 per limo, $40 per mini-bus or trolley and $70 per Greyhound bus.

Whitecaps unveil logo for All-Star Game

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.-- The West Michigan Whitecaps are getting ready to host the 50th Midwest League All-Star Game.

The team unveiled the All-Star logo Tuesday.  Whitecaps executives chose a beer theme for the logo because of the recent boom in the local craft brewery industry, as well as Grand Rapids’ title of Beer City USA.

The team also announced tickets for the All-Star game will go on sale Tuesday, March 4, 2014. Tickets will range from $8 for lawn seating to $16 for premium box seats. Season tickets, luxury suites and private decks for the game can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps ticket department at (616) 784-4131.

The All-Star Game will take place at Fifth Third Ballpark Tuesday, June 17, 2014.   This is the third All-Star game the Whitecaps have hosted.

UPDATE: The Grand Rapids Public Museum has postponed Saturday's lecture due to illness.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—This Saturday will mark 72 years since Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, pushing the United States to enter World War II.

This Pearl Harbor Day, the Grand Rapids Public Museum will turn the spotlight on one of its own volunteers, who grew up in Nazi Germany.  Bernie Siehling will share an insider’s perspective of the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler and Nazi rule.  Siehling plans to talk about avoiding Hitler youth, building relationships with Prisoners Of War ordered to work on his family’s farm, and witnessing a British Royal Air Force Bomber crash.
