It was a busy evening at the Alpine Township Library Wednesday as nearly 30 Alpine Elementary School children and parents visited to learn all about the services offered..  For many, it was the first time they set foot in a library and they were amazed that they could borrow books and music and movies, or use computers at no charge.

The program was sponsored by Alpine Elementary School specifically for student who use English as a second language.  Many families signed up and while the library has a good selection of books in Spanish, most of the books signed...

8th Annual Comstock Park Athletic Boosters Cash Bash Raffle

Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 19, 2011 for the eighth annual Comstock Park Athletic Boosters Cash Bash Raffle.
 
The event will be held at the Comstock Park American Legion located at 3811 West River Drive (corner of Four Mile and West River). Only 160 tickets will be sold so don't miss out on your chance to purchase your tickets early.

Last year, with your support, over $11,000 was raised to support the athletic programs for grades 7 through 12 at Mill Creek Middle School and Comstock Park High School.

The format for the party is the same as last year-a total of 160 $100 tickets will be sold. Of this number, five will be held back to be raffled off during the course of the night. This is a reverse raffle… the last ticket drawn is the grand prize winner. First place prize is $5,000; second, $1,000, third and fourth places, $500 each.

The 3rd Annual Cancer Classic is scheduled for Friday, February 18 at our Varsity Basketball games vs. Coopersville.  T-shirts are on sale at the high school and middle school this week and next for $10.  Shirts will also be available at the event.  All spectators wearing their shirt will be admitted to games on Thursday and Friday for free.  All proceeds from this event will be donated to benefit cancer research.  Please come out and support the cause!

Comstock Park Community Outreach

As much as sensational stories grab the headlines, it is important that these are  balanced with good stories in the community.  Such was the story about the good Samaritan  Rafael Gonzalez-Velazquez who with his son took in who he thought to be a homeless man.  It turned out that the elderly gentleman they opened their home for had Alzheimer's Disease and could well have wandered off the road to die in the bitter cold.  So will the story about a life saved cancel out the bad publicity about a life taken in the York Creek community in 2008?

The quality of life of the residents in the York Creek community continues to improve.

Relay for Life held it's kick off party Thursday night and lots of excited volunteers came out to help celebrate despite the snow and a Comstock Park Bond Proposal rally scheduled for the same evening.

Comstock Park Lions travel to Muir to pick up latest member

The Comstock Park Lions witnessed its latest member getting sworn in by District Governor Fran Osborne during last night's visit to the Muir Lions Club. Craig Wheeler, who is employed in the vincinity of Muir, lives in nearby Coopersville and is anxious to get involved in community service.

The Comstock Park Lions were chartered last year. They currently meet at 5:30 PM every first Tuesday of the month at the R & R. Coffeehouse and Cafe at 3922 West River Drive N.E. across from Dwight Lydell Park. The Comstock Park Lions Club is currently in the progress of conducting a fundraiser with the Alpine Ave, Applebees, which committed  to donating 20% of the bill of any party presenting a copy of the attached coupon all day Sunday, February 20th. 100% of the proceeds will be used to send visually impaired youth to Bear Lake Camp this summer.

A Kick-Off Party for this year’s American Cancer Society fight against cancer will be held on , Jan. 20 2011 at 6:30 PM at  Greenridge Elementary School, 3825 Oakridge, NW Comstock Park. Relay For Life, a community-wide celebration of hope, is a fun-filled, overnight fundraiser celebrating cancer survivorship and raising money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society.
