GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- It's a big weekend for sports in West Michigan. The sixth annual Meijer State Games kicked off its second and biggest weekend with an opening ceremony Friday at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The Meijer State Games is a multi-sport, Olympic-style event that welcomes athletes regardless of age or ability. Forty-four different venues are hosting the games and 7,500 athletes will compete more than 40 different sports.

The games are expected to have an estimated $14.3 million economic impact in West Michigan. Hoteliers and restaurants will benefit from the large number of people traveling here from other parts of the state.

Registration is still open and members of the community are encouraged to support the games and athletes by attending the events.
