Set Saturday, along with Saturday, April 5th at 1pm aside to get some great information and ideas for gardening this spring.

Free gardening classes are being offered to Comstock Park & Alpine Township residents and neighbors at York Creek Community Center at 3999 Alpenhorn Drive in Comstock Park.

Member of The Verve Pipe to sing for children in need

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—   West Michigan native Brian VanderArk is lending his voice to help children in need.

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, the singer-songwriter will host a concert at the B.O.B. in downtown Grand Rapids to benefit Feeding American West Michigan Food Bank, based in Comstock Park.

VanderArk is a member of The Verve Pipe.  He will be joined by Channing and Quinn and Mark Sala for the special performance.  Doors open at 7 p.m.

Tickets start at $20 and may be purchased at the Will Play For Food Foundation website here.  The goal is to send 5,000 meals to hungry children.

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.-- Grand Rapids police say the detective who will benefit from Saturday's Robert Kozminski Memorial Basketball Games has had a successful double lung transplant.

The department says Kent County deputy Aron Bowser is recovering at home.  Proceeds from the games on Saturday, Feb. 1 wil go toward his medical expenses.

This is the seventh year for the friendly competition at Kenowa Hills. The games begin at 6:30 p.m. with Kenowa Hills teachers playing officers from the Wyoming, Grandville, Walker, Rockford, Kentwood and Grand Rapids police departments.  The second game will pit the Grand Rapids Police Department against the Kent County Sheriff’s Department. Griff from the Grand Rapids Griffins will also stop by for the games.

Admission is free, but donations are encouraged.

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.--  School staff will take on a team of officers this Saturday, Feb. 1 as the Robert Kozminski Memorial Basketball Games return to Kenowa Hills.

This is the seventh year for the friendly competition. The games begin at 6:30 p.m. with Kenowa Hills administrators and teachers playing local law enforcement members.  The second game will pit the Grand Rapids Police Department against the Kent County Sheriff’s Department. Griff from the Grand Rapids Griffins will also stop by for the games.

Admission is free, but donations are encouraged.  The proceeds will benefit Kent County Sheriff Detective Aron Bowser who is currently awaiting a lung transplant.

Excel Charter Academy honors Martin Luther King Jr. with day of service

KENTWOOD, Mich.--  Excel Charter Academy students remembered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ahead of the holiday by serving their community.

 On Friday, Jan. 17, seventh and eighth grade students divided up to help community organizations, including the YWCA, Kids Food Basket, Feeding America West Michigan, Habitat for Humanity, Baxter Community Center, Degage, GRASP, Goodwill and In The Image.

As part of Excel’s MLK Service Day, Arbor Circle also visited the school to teach sixth grade students about teenage homelessness and how they can help support teenagers in need.

Sparta offering Adult Education classes in four locations

Sparta Adult Education is offering classes in GED (General Education Development), ESL, (English as a second language) and ABE (Adult Basic Education) with classes being offered at four locations.

Open House and Registration is scheduled for Wednesday, January 22nd from 4-7pm at Sparta Middle School, 480 S. State St. in Sparta or at York Creek Community Center, 3999 Alpenhorn, Comstock Park from 5:30-8:30pm. Classes begin on Monday, January 27, 2014.

Santa Claus visits York Creek Apartments Dec. 20

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.--  Santa Claus is a busy man, but not too  busy to neglect visiting the children of York Creek Apartments.

The man in red will pose for pictures and offer treats during his stop Friday, Dec. 20, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Santa’s visit is open only to York Creek Apartment residents.  The event will take place at the apartment office, located at 650 York Creek Dr. in Comstock Park.
