Determining your home's value before selling

Determining your home's value before selling

Knowing the value of your home is critical before putting it up for sale.

There are several ways to determine the value of your home.  Online resources such as Trulia, Zillow, Realtor.com and Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) will provide you with an estimate of the value of your home or your local market overall.  Here are the links to these calculators:

With home prices rising more than 10 percent on average last year and inventory levels at historical lows, this is a great year to sell your home and maximize your value.  The current turnaround in housing is being attributed to a number of factors:

My Town: Construction on an upswing in Plainfield Township

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.—Hammers and saws are busy once again in Plainfield Township, as home and business construction picks up with the improving economy.

“Plats of land that have been on hold for years are coming back to life this spring,” said Bill Fischer, community development director for Plainfield Township.  “Many of these plats already have the infrastructure built; subdivisions that have roads and utilities, water and sewer.  And now, finally, the builders are feeling confident in the market and moving forward with construction.”

From Jan. 1 through the month of April, construction crews worked on homes and businesses in the township totaling more than $5.5 million in value.  Fischer says the long winter delayed many building permit applications until late April, so that investment only reflected a few weeks of investments.

WRIGHT TOWNSHIP, Mich.—The Superintendent of Kenowa Hills Public Schools says new plans may be forming for another shuttered elementary school.

Superintendent Gerald Hopkins says a church is considering buying Marne Elementary to keep it in the community.  Hopkins says the church has been eyeing the property for about six to eight months now.

Marne and Fairview elementary schools closed in 2010 because of declining enrollment. In August 2012, Wright Township officials offered to buy Marne Elementary for $1, but the school board rejected the deal.

The Salvation Army has an agreement with Kenowa Hills to possibly purchase Fairview Elementary for $500,000 and transform it into a service center.

It may have been cold recently but it did not deter workers from working in the elements.  Seen here are some workers at Fox Motors putting up new signage and doing some paving to finalize an expansion project, while other workers were seen at Township Hall installing a new roof.  ... Read More
