Applebee's owners to auction off memorabilia for charity

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.--- Stained glass light covers, novelty mirrors, sports memorabilia and much more will be up for bid Tuesday November 19, as the owners of the Applebee’s in Comstock Park auction off the restaurant’s furnishings.

Team Schostak Family Restaurants is selling off the restaurant’s current décor to clear the way for remodeling.  The Applebee’s located at 3851 Alpine Ave. will remain open.

The auction begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday and is expected to last several days. Bidding will run through 8 p.m. on www.repocast.com.  Proceeds from the auction will go to Family Promise, a non-profit organization committed to helping low income families achieve lasting independence.

Some West Michigan restaurants are honoring miliatry members  this Veterans Day by serving up free meals.

Lakeshore Partnership is also offering a free meal to veterans at 19 of its local McDonald’s restaurants.  Military identification is preferred, but not required.  Participating locations include:

ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich.--- Bring your own booze for a free cooking class at Amore Trattoria Italiana this weekend.

Saturday, Chef Jenna will teach amateur chefs how to make limoncello, cioccolacello and other treats.  Jmh Schwanke with uBloom will also be on hand to show visitors how to make “flower cocktails.” Those interested should bring the following ingredients:

Kent County honors cleanest restaurants with Food Safety Awards

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—Where are the safest places to eat in Kent County?

The county health department is answering that question with the 2013 Food Safety Awards.   The agency whittled down the list of 1,654 eligible restaurants to just 269 facilities, based on routine restaurant and food service inspections over the past year.  Under the county’s criteria, restaurants that earn the award must have a certified food safety manager, no confirmed violations of the Michigan Smoke Free Law and no confirmed foodborne illness outbreaks during the year.

UPDATE: West Ottawa celebrates 'Spirit Bracket Challenge' victory

HOLLAND, Mich.-- Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar will reward the winner of its “Spirit Bracket Challenge” November 5.

The restaurant organized the friendly fundraising competition as a way to promote school spirit while helping a dozen local schools raise money for classroom supplies and school activities.

Kenowa Hills 6th grade/Alpine Elementary and West Ottawa High School were the last two competitors standing, besting ten other schools in the Teriyaki 12 and Spicy 6 fundraising rounds.  In the end, West Ottawa won the Flamin’ Finals.  In addition to the funds students raised throughout the competition, West Ottawa will get an additional $2,500 from Buffalo Wild Wings.  The school will be rewarded with a special check during its celebratory pep rally Tuesday, November 5.

Fundraiser September 22 for scholarship in honor of late chef

Fundraiser September 22 for scholarship in honor of late chef

A fundraiser to establish a scholarship fund in honor of Chef Mark Noseda will take place September 22.

Noseda passed away August 16, a day before the soft opening of Freighters in Port Huron.  Noseda was an executive chef for Meritage Hospitality Group, which includes Twisted Rooster in My Town Ada/Cascade and Crooked Goose in My Town Walker. He was 35 years old.

A scholarship fund in Noseda’s name is being established to support culinary students attending Grand Rapids Community College’s Secchia Institute for Culinary Education.  Sunday's fundraiser will run from noon to 3 p.m.  at Amore Trattoria Italiana Restaurant, located at 5080 Alpine Ave.
