Excel Charter Academy honors Martin Luther King Jr. with day of service

KENTWOOD, Mich.--  Excel Charter Academy students remembered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ahead of the holiday by serving their community.

 On Friday, Jan. 17, seventh and eighth grade students divided up to help community organizations, including the YWCA, Kids Food Basket, Feeding America West Michigan, Habitat for Humanity, Baxter Community Center, Degage, GRASP, Goodwill and In The Image.

As part of Excel’s MLK Service Day, Arbor Circle also visited the school to teach sixth grade students about teenage homelessness and how they can help support teenagers in need.

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.-- The 6th annual Cancer Classic basketball games will take place Friday, Jan. 24 with proceeds benefiting Relay For Life of Comstock Park.

This year's opponent is Wyoming.  The varsity girls' game will be at 6:00 p.m. followed by the varsity boys' game.  Cancer Classic T-Shirts and crew sweatshirts will be available in the high school, Mill Creek and Pine Island offices for $10 (T-shirt) or $20 (crew sweatshirt) starting Tuesday, Jan. 21.  Admission to the games will be $3 with the purchase of a 2014 Cancer Classic T-Shirt or Crew Sweatshirt.

Varsity basketball teams to raise autism awareness Feb. 7

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— Four varsity basketball teams will take over the court next month to raise awareness about autism.

Union High School will play against Kenowa High School on Autism Awareness Night Friday, Feb. 7.  The event includes a half-time shoot out and drawings for prizes.  All proceeds from the games will go to Autism Support of Kent County.

General admission is $5 per person or free with the purchase of an autism awareness t-shirt.  T-shirts are $10 and available by contacting Martha Knoll-Loader at (616) 819-3918.

The girls’ varsity game will be at 6 p.m.; the boys will play at 7:30 p.m.  Both match ups will be at Union High School, located at 1800 Tremont Blvd. NW in Grand Rapids.

Whitehall school club seeks donations to curb food waste

WHITEHALL, Mich.—  A group of Whitehall Middle School students is turning to the community for help with a national competition.

Whitehall Middle School teacher Susan Tate recently sent a message to the district on behalf of the environmental club, asking for donations to fund a mobile food pantry for families in the White Lake area.  The outreach project is part of the club’s project for the Lexus Eco Challenge.  The club is competing against 15 other middle schools nationwide in tackling the issue of food waste and its effect on the environment.  The Whitehall Middle School Environmental Club is teaming up with Feeding America West Michigan of Comstock Park to create the mobile food pantry.

Sparta offering Adult Education classes in four locations

Sparta Adult Education is offering classes in GED (General Education Development), ESL, (English as a second language) and ABE (Adult Basic Education) with classes being offered at four locations.

Open House and Registration is scheduled for Wednesday, January 22nd from 4-7pm at Sparta Middle School, 480 S. State St. in Sparta or at York Creek Community Center, 3999 Alpenhorn, Comstock Park from 5:30-8:30pm. Classes begin on Monday, January 27, 2014.

Get dinner and a movie while helping schools Jan. 25

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.—The Comstock Park Parent-Teacher Organization is inviting families for a night out to help the schools.

The Comstock Park PTO Annual Night Out will take place Saturday, Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. in the Wave Room at Celebration Cinema North.  The event includes dinner catered by Twisted Rooster followed by a private screening of “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit”.  An auction to benefit school programs is also planned.

ChoiceOne Bank is one of the sponsors of the event, contributing $1,500.

 “The Annual Night Out event is focused on the Comstock Park schools and community. We are pleased to be a part of such a generous and exciting event,” said ChoiceOne Bank President and CEO Jim Bosserd.
