My Town Comstock Park: Donations needed for inner city youth sports programs

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.--  Give your unwanted sports equipment new life by donating it to the Inner City Youth Baseball and Softball programs.

This is the final week for the equipment drive, which ends Friday, June 6.   The program is in need of kid size bats, cleats, catcher’s gear and other baseball or softball equipment. Donations can be dropped off at Fifth Third Ballpark, any Fifth Third Bank, the David D. Hunting YMCA, Spartan Stores YMCA, Wolverine World Wide YMCA, Visser YMCA, Southeast YMCA or Lowell YMCA.

Donors will receive four lawn seat tickets to a 2014 Whitecaps home game, a Wendy’s small combo meal and a YMCA family day pass.

My Town Comstock Park: KDL hosts Whitecaps tickets giveaway

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.—Kent District Library is teaming up with the West Michigan Whitecaps to take you out to the ball game.

Now through June 14, library patrons who stop by their local branch can enter to win a pair of tickets to the Whitecaps game on June 30 at 12 p.m.  Library fans can increase their chances of winning by commenting on the Win Whitecaps Tickets blog post on the library website.  One commenter will be chosen at random to win a pair of tickets.

KDL cardholders who do not win can still cash in.  Those who show their library card at the box office can get a free reserved seat to the game when they purchase one ticket.

My Town Comstock Park: Hacking for Education Golf Outing deadline nears

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.—Enjoy the green while raising some green for school programs during the Hacking for Education Golf Outing, organized by the Comstock Park Educational Foundation.

The registration deadline for this event is June 1.  For a $70 entry fee, golfers get 18 holes of golf, a cart, lunch, dinner and entry into shot contests.  Registration and lunch is at noon, with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m.  For a registration form, click here.

Proceeds from Hacking for Education Golf Outing will support the Comstock Park Educational Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization that supports educational programs throughout the district.

My Town Comstock Park: Whitecaps looking for bands for Social Media Night

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.—The West Michigan Whitecaps are once again turning to Facebook to help piece together  Social Media Night.

The team is looking for a local band to play at the post-game party on the Miller Lite House Deck.  The Whitecaps are asking fans to submit the name of their favorite local band on Facebook by Monday, May 12.  The team will chose the best ones and then put them up for a vote.

Earlier this year, the Whitecaps challenged fans to come up with a custom jersey for the team to wear during Social Media Night.  Submissions were made through Facebook and Twitter.  Social Media Night will take over Fifth Third Ballpark Thursday, May 29.

My Town: Kenowa Hills hosts Homes For A Hero benefit May 2

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.—Community members are invited to show their support for veterans by taking part in Kenowa Hills High School’s Homes For A Hero event thgis Friday, May 2.

Students have spent weeks preparing for the benefit, which will take place at Kenowa Hills High School, from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  The celebration will include a silent auction, cook-out and live entertainment as well as a ceremony recognizing veterans and active military members.

Homes For A Hero will also include a varsity rugby game between Kenowa Hills and Grand Haven, starting at 6 p.m.  Kenowa Hills’ team will be sporting camouflage jerseys  for the game. After the match-up, the Grand Rapids Original Swing Society will hold swing dancing under the stadium lights, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Proceeds from Homes For A Hero will go toward building a home for a veteran.  Students are teaming up with Homes of Hope, a Grand Rapids organization, for the six-day build.
